Measures to Strengthen Quality Management of Bridge Engineering

In the previous article, we introduced four common quality issues in bridge construction. This article will explore measures to strengthen the quality management of bridge engineering.  

 1. Continuously Enhance Construction Quality Awareness

In the process of bridge construction quality management, it is particularly essential to build a team of technical personnel with strong ideological integrity and high professional quality. Improving the comprehensive quality of technical personnel in construction operations is of great significance for the smooth progress of the entire project. Experienced, skilled, and responsible professionals should be prioritized to lead technical teams, while young talents should be focused on cultivating. Emphasis should be placed on specific quality standards, and professional training should be conducted to enable personnel to understand and master domestic and international construction and acceptance quality standards, ensuring strict compliance with these standards. A scientific construction quality assurance plan is a necessary measure, and improving the scientific quality management system is the guarantee for construction. In engineering construction, first-class design, excellent engineering technology, and meticulous planning (starting from surveying and mapping) are crucial. The accuracy of data is a prerequisite for formulating construction plans, so the investment in surveying should be correspondingly increased at the early stage.

2. Continuously Improve the Quality Management Organization  

For each project, a dedicated quality management institution should be established, composed of supervisors, designers, and relevant technical personnel. Meanwhile, corresponding quality measures must be formulated. Technical work plans should be strictly implemented, and corresponding requirements should be set for construction workers, technicians, and managers. Each project must have clear inspection regulations, and construction and acceptance signatures must be obtained before proceeding to the next process. Additionally, attention should be paid to quality records to clarify quality responsibilities in case of accidents.  

3. Continuously Strengthen the Engineering Quality Evaluation Mechanism

In reality, some major bridge engineering quality accidents may be caused by problems in design, construction, supervision, etc., and on the other hand, the inaccurate evaluation of bridge construction quality during and after completion is a significant factor. For the quality evaluation of bridge projects, new technologies and methods can be tried, such as using sample estimation for project quality and reliability analysis, and applying fuzzy mathematics for comprehensive quality evaluation of bridge projects. This will reduce the impact of subjective evaluation factors and compensate for the common defect in the current quality inspection and evaluation of sub-projects and divisional works, where the weight distribution is overly generalized.  

4. Continuously Adopt Modern Technologies  

Information technology, computer technology, network technology, and modern communication technology should also be applied in bridge engineering quality supervision and management, closely integrating them with quality supervision and management work to achieve information resource sharing and provide accurate and sufficient information for quality supervision, management, and decision-making of bridge projects. The ultimate goal is to establish a quality control and management information system. To achieve this goal, improving engineering quality through two key aspects—managerial and technological innovation—is a long-term strategic task for China's economy and a common goal and responsibility of all relevant parties. Strengthening bridge engineering quality management requires coordination and cooperation between constructors and managers, who must strictly abide by quality-related laws, regulations, and technical specifications to raise the quality of bridge projects to a new level.
