Batang Rambungan Bridge in Malaysia

Description

The main works of Package D1 of Sarawak Coastal Highway, Malaysia consist of a cable-stayed bridge together with its approach spans and connecting roads, with a total length of 1,375 meters. The project is composed of a 320m low-pylon cable-stayed main bridge, 240m approach spans on both banks, and auxiliary roadbeds and ramps:

Batang Rambungan Bridge

1. Main bridge span arrangement: A three-span low-pylon double-cable-plane outward splayed cable-stayed bridge with a span combination of 80m+160m+80m, adopting single-box single-cell prestressed concrete box girders;

2. Approach spans: 40m precast prestressed T-beams, totaling 36 pieces, erected via launching gantry;

3. Main pylons: Twin independent low pylons, with 8 groups of stay cables symmetrically arranged on both sides of the main girder;

4. Core construction technology: The entire main girder of the main bridge is constructed by symmetrical balanced cantilever casting with form travellers, namely Form Traveller Balanced Cantilever Casting, which serves as the key and difficult construction technique of the project.

Boyuan supplied 5 sets of cantilever form travellers for this project.

In early July 2026: The Minister of Infrastructure Development of Sarawak conducted an on-site inspection. The overall project progress reached 73.27%. Construction of the first cantilever segment equipped with stay cables was completed, and the remaining 7 groups of cantilever segments using form travellers were being carried out in an orderly manner. The construction progress of form traveller operations across the whole line was accelerated, and the full completion and opening to traffic of the entire bridge are scheduled by the end of 2026.

It is reported that Package D1 of Sarawak Coastal Highway is a livelihood project jointly built by China and Malaysia reflecting mutual support and friendship between the two peoples. Located at the vital transportation artery linking Kuching City and Lundu District in Sarawak, Malaysia, the two regions have been separated by a river for decades, with ferries being the only channel for passenger, vehicle and cargo transportation. Upon completion, the project will significantly upgrade the transportation network connecting Kuching and Lundu, and carry great economic significance for facilitating coastal trade.
